A solid color floor is a pigmented polyaspartic coating with no flake: one clean, even color in the shade you pick. It's a practical finish for shops, storage rooms, laundry areas and commercial back rooms. It shows dust and tire marks more than a flake floor, and it's smooth unless we add grit, which we do anywhere the floor gets wet.
A solid color floor gets the same full diamond grind, crack repair and moisture check as any coating we install. The pigmented coat goes on in layers for an even color, and the finish is UV stable, so it won't yellow by a sunny garage door or window.
1Grind and repairDiamond grind to about CSP 2–3, then fill cracks, pits and joints.
2Base coatA pigmented base coat bonds into the ground concrete.
3Color coatA second pigmented coat evens out the color. No flake.
4Topcoat, with grit where it's wetA UV-stable topcoat takes the wear; grit goes in where the floor gets wet.
What it costs
Nationally, professional coatings run about $4 to $12 per square foot installed (HomeGuide). Your price depends on the size, the repairs and the finish, and comes from photos of the floor. See the coating cost guide.
A pigmented coating with no flake, in one even color. It gets the same prep as a flake floor and is finished with grit anywhere the floor gets wet.
Does a solid color floor show dirt more than flake?
Yes. With no flake to break up the surface, dust, tire marks and scuffs show more. That's also why some shops prefer it: a dropped part or a new leak is easy to spot.
How much does a solid color floor coating cost?
Nationally, professional floor coatings run about $4 to $12 per square foot installed (HomeGuide). Our price comes from photos of your floor and its size, by text within 24 hours. The size, crack and pit repair, and any old paint or sealer that has to be ground off move the number most.
What colors can I get in a solid color floor?
A range of shades, and we bring real samples, because a color on a screen never matches a floor. Grays are the most forgiving with everyday dirt. Lighter shades hide dust better, while darker ones show dust and scuffs more, so pick with how the room gets used in mind.
Does a solid color floor get a clear topcoat like a flake floor?
Yes. The pigmented color goes on in layers for an even finish, then it gets the same UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat we use on flake floors, which takes the wear and won't yellow by a sunny door or window. Grit goes into that topcoat wherever the floor gets wet.
Does adding grit make a solid color floor harder to clean?
A little. Grit gives the topcoat a fine texture that holds a bit more dirt than a smooth finish, so a soft deck brush works better than a flat mop. That's why we add it where the floor gets wet, like entries and wash areas, and can leave dry areas smoother.
Does a solid color floor show scratches?
More than a flake floor does. On one even color, a scratch from a dragged toolbox or a dropped wrench catches the light, where a flake pattern would hide it. Rubber tires, jack stands and creepers are fine; it's dragging steel across the floor that scratches it.
Can a chip in a solid color floor be touched up?
Yes, though it's easier to see than on flake. A small chip is cleaned out, filled and recoated in the same color, but on one even color the edges of a repair can still show a little. Text us a photo and we'll tell you whether a spot repair or recoating the section will look better.
How do I get tire marks and scuffs off a solid color floor?
They sit on top of the coating, so most come up with a pH-neutral cleaner and a microfiber mop or soft deck brush, and a degreaser handles stubborn tire marks. Skip abrasive pads, bleach, vinegar and citrus cleaners, which can dull the finish. More in cleaning concrete floors.
Is a solid color floor a good idea for a garage?
It works, but most people pick flake for a garage. A solid color shows salt film, dust and tire marks more, and it needs grit in the topcoat for grip with snowmelt on the floor. If you'd rather spot leaks and dropped parts at a glance, a solid color garage with grit is a practical choice.
Will a solid color floor look even, or can it come out blotchy?
It should look even from wall to wall. The pigmented color goes on in more than one layer, so it builds up evenly without thin or streaky spots, and grinding the whole floor first gives every part of it the same surface to bond to.
Will a light solid color floor make my shop brighter?
Yes. A light solid color reflects more of your shop lights than bare concrete does, so the whole building looks brighter and it's easier to find small parts. The trade-off is that tire marks and scuffs show more on it than they would on a flake floor.
How long does a solid color floor take to install?
Usually a day for a one- or two-car garage or a room that size. Grinding, repairs, the color coats and the topcoat go on the same day, because polyaspartic can be recoated within hours. You can walk on it within a few hours and drive on it after about 24 to 48 hours.
Is solid color a good finish for a storage or mechanical room?
Yes. It gives a clean, bright, uniform floor that's easy to sweep and mop, and with no flake, a drip from a water heater, furnace or water softener shows up right away. Fixed equipment doesn't have to move; we coat around it.
Will filled cracks show on a solid color floor?
They can, a little. Cracks are filled and ground flush before the color goes on, but with no flake to break up the surface, a faint line can still show where a flake floor would hide it. A crack that's still moving can come back through any coating, so those get handled before we coat.
